Van Borssom is one of those many ‘small’, unknown Dutch masters who nevertheless reached a high artistic level. ‘Farmhouse on the river’ was considered a “capital painting” by Cornelis Vroom, “entirely in the manner of Hobbema”. Bredius bought it in 1892 and recognised Van Borssom’s hand in it.
